Job Closed, Or Is It?

Job Closed.  Wait!  What?  How can this be, I have an interview tomorrow!?!?

Not to panic.  There are many reasons why a job posting site would indicate a job is closed.

Reasons the Job Shows as Closed

It really is closed.  The company filled it and just pulled the posting.  This is unusual if you are scheduled for an interview and haven’t been told not to show up.  However, it could happen.

It also could be the position for which you applied has actually been filled, BUT, they still want to meet you.  Why would they want to do that?

Because:

• They may have a second opening just like this one right now.
• They expect to have another opening in the next couple of months.
• They have another position altogether for which they think you might be a better fit.

The company has received so many resumes for this position, they have decided not to keep it open.  It will take them weeks or months to go through the resumes they already have, so they have decided to cut down on the amount of work required to review them all.

Monetary Reasons

Other than the obvious reasons for seeing “Job Closed” on a job board, it is possible the company who posted it has spent their budget and keeping the positing live is just costing too much money.

Posting jobs is an expensive part of the recruiting process.

Just because a job appears to be closed, doesn’t mean it truly is.  If the job was originally posted on the company’s web site and you can’t find it there now, that is a better indication that it may be filled.  Even if that is the case, there are still those reasons above to go to an already scheduled interview and keep an open mind.  Some of the best job opportunities appear when you least expect them.
